Making your own cutting board
When making your own butcher block cutting board, you first have to choose the wood. Almost any wood can be used as long as it is a hardwood, but because of shipping cost a person might want to find a wood that is easily obtain locally. The wood has to be extremely smooth, so if you are buying un-surfaced lumber, run it through a planer first. Then rip the board down into strips and cut them at random intervals. Cut two strips the length of the desired cutting board. These will be used for the first and last boards.
Lay down a piece of wax paper over your work table, and then lay down the first strip. After that, lay down the strips that were cut in random intervals making sure everything matches up and is square. Continue this process until the cutting board is the desired width. Next lay down the last strip that was reserved initially. This is your “dry run.” Check to make sure everything is square. Next you can start glue the strips together. Some people choose to glue one strip to another, clamp it, and let it dry before gluing the next piece, believing it creates a stronger board.
Whether you choose to do this or glue all the pieces together and then clamp all of it is up to you. Place another piece of wax paper over the glued together strips before clamping them together. When everything is dry, remove the clamps and wax paper and sand the excess glue and any rough edges. Apply mineral oil to the board. More info can been seen at home owners resource guide.
